Room Lockout Policy

We are instructing the RA staff that the only time they should let students into their room is during business or RA office hours.

The hours are:

This may seem like an unfair policy so we want to help you understand where we are coming from. As Residence Life Staff, we are responsible for all the residents of this building. Part of our duty includes teaching people responsibility and monitoring the workload of the staff.

If we allow students unlimited lockouts the Residential Life Staff would spend the majority of their time letting students into their rooms. For example, if we do two lockouts per student per semester that could mean 130+ lockouts divided between six RAs. That works out to be an average of 33+ lockouts per RAs.

Please utilize the 65 and 1/2 established office hours a week to be let into your room. This is a very important request and we would appreciate your cooperation.

The personal safety of you and the RA is very important. Personal safety is achieved when you, the resident, are inside the building. Call your roommate to get access to your room. In order to keep both you and the RAs safe, the RAs will unlock your door after midnight only if you are locked out of the building and cannot reach any of your roommates/friends. So, if your roommates or friends are in the building call them BEFORE calling a RA. If you are locked out, but in the building, please wait for your roommates -- if this impossible, then contact the RA on duty.

An easy way to remedy this situation is to always carry your keys. However, we know that mistakes happen so we are more than willing to help you during stated office hours.
